NADAV KANDER
Nadav Kander was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. Kander began taking pictures when he was 13 on a Pentax camera. Kander has taken many iconic photographs of powerful world figures most notably president Obama for the new york times in which he depicted obama in a clear gritty form and depicted the president as a real human which makes him very relatable to many americans.
Photograph 2- the Woman; This photograph is of a woman on her back with her arms and legs risen, The photograph is taken from head height looking down at the women Nadav has managed to capture movement in this photo in which the woman looks likes she is falling through the air. The composition of this photo works well as the woman is centre with the grey of the floor and the grey of her dress being spit u and contrasted by her porcelain skin.

Photograph 1- Barack Obama; This photo was taken by Nadav Kandar as one of his 52 portrait shots of the president and his top advisers in a collection named 'Obamas people' The image dipicts obama in his most natural form a close up 3/4 profile shot with such focus that we can see the fine lines of his face. I think this shows him to be a normal human, something unusual and interesting for Americans so used to seeing him in a much more powerful light.

MY LONDON
For my "my London' strands I decided to look at the contrast between the interior and exterior of some of the places in my local area, I also wanted to capture the way the places made me feel through the way in which i photographed them.
Strand 1- interior
Catherine YassI found a photographer Catherine Yass who was born in 1963 in London and is noted for her films and brightly coloured photos in which she focuses on the positive and negative and tends to look at institutionalised type structures
|
She took a series of photos in a mental hospital 'corridors' and played around with the gradient to make the pictures more alive yet still possess the qualities of loneliness and solitude.
|
|
My responseFor my first strand in 'my London I wanted to look at inside landscape and especially the architecture and lines of instituions as I think they have a very cold feel. for my response I wanted to look at the structure of my school, I focused on the corridors and windows and in photoshop wanted to work on using contrasting gradients to highlight these lines.

Strand 2- In the Snow...
For my second strand I wanted to look at London through black and white and the contrast between the white snow and the dark colours of the trees and branches in my local woods, I decided to use film because I wanted to use black and white and i felt the colours contrast more with film. I like this collection of photos as I think they capture the bleakness and solidarity of the woods covered in snow. They also show an aspect of my london as this is a place in which I visit a lot.
|
I like this set of pictures as i think they focus on the texture of the snow, although if I did them again I would focus on more open spaces opposed to just close ups.
|
Strand 3- Messing with nature
Strand 4- SOHO |
For my Third strand I decided to look at a combination of both of my first strands. I liked the gradient of my first strand but I wanted to try using the gradient for only part of the photo to highlight a certain aspect.
|
For my 4th strand I wanted to look further at the idea of contrasting colours within landscape. I decided to shoot in Soho and area with historical buildings and known for its vibrancy, It was a very sunny morning so I had to focus on balancing the light the best I could. I wanted to focus on the lines of structural buildings in contrast to the bright morning sky.
Final Outcome
For my final outcome I wanted to continue the focus on contrasting colours within landscape and I liked the location of my previous strand as I felt the closely pack buildings and interesting structural lines of soho are interesting to capture, I decided to use film to pick up more of the light and shadows created by the buildings and the morning sun, as I used film none of my photographs were digitally edited and I am very happy with the outcome, with an ISO of 200, I wanted to capture the beauty of these typically controversial alleyways in the morning sun and focus on the black and white contrast. Due to the weather conditions some of the photos came out over exposed.
